Started in 2001, the Dot NAME universal top-level domain extension is the sole TLD meant for personal websites only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are known by. At first, only 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to reserve john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Existing 3rd-level names remained operational.
